NNHMN – Strange Love
The Berlin duo Lee and Michal Laudarg have been building their catalog steadily since relocating from Warsaw, working at the intersection of minimal techno and darkwave with hardware-driven productions that feel rooted in a particular kind of late-night urban atmosphere. “Strange Love” is the latest single, released as part of their album Opera of Lust and the Art of Sorrow.
The track is held together by an arpeggio pattern that runs through the majority of the song and gives the song most of its character. It circles and resurfaces just enough to feel like an anchor rather than a loop. The haunting sound of the arp pattern is quite hypotnic. Lee Laudarg’s vocals sit above it with the same studied restraint the duo brings to their production. Nothing overreaches.
The bassline is there and doing its work, but the arp is what stays with you. It has a haunting quality that the rest of the arrangement frames well without overshadowing. Straightforward construction, memorable result.
