Kontravoid – Mortal
“Mortal” lands closer to industrial techno than past favorite’s of ours, including Kontravoid’s collaboration with Nuovo Testamento’s Chelsey Crowley. Cameron Findlay has always sat at the intersection of club music and darkness, but this single - the first taste of a new full-length coming later in 2026 - pushes further into physical territory than its predecessor Detachment.
The vocals are barely there, but it feels more than intentional. Rather than sitting above the mix, they fold into the instrumentation as another layer of texture - present enough to register, submerged enough to feel like part of the machinery. It works. The track doesn’t need a focal point when the momentum is this consistent.
Strip it down and what’s left is exactly what a dark dancefloor needs: tension that doesn’t release, drive that doesn’t let up. Findlay, who cut his teeth as live drummer for Crystal Castles before building Kontravoid into a decade-long underground fixture, knows how to make a room move. “Mortal” knows exactly what it is.
If this is the opening statement for the new album, the rest should be worth waiting for.
