Bragolin – I Don't Like What It Does to Me

If you’ve spent any time on dark post-punk playlists in the last few years, you’ve likely already heard Bragolin without knowing it. Edwin van der Velde’s 2018 debut quietly racked up streaming numbers that most acts in this scene never see and songs like “Into Those Woods” and “This Grotesque Dance” became dancefloor staples.

I Don’t Like What It Does to Me is van der Velde building on what worked rather than reinventing it. The formula is familiar: minimally arranged songs recorded to sound bigger than they are, vocals that lean into moodiness without tipping into outright despair. What saves it from feeling like a retread is restraint. Van der Velde’s vocals are always present, composed and unhurried, regardless of what’s happening in the arrangement underneath it.

The record moves between moods without losing its thread. “Feel This Flame Unfold” featuring Carrellee is an early standout for us. “This Presence Like a Breeze” is a close second, with the detuned synthesizers providing an almost haunting and unnerving feel. The title track will likely prove to be one of the bigger hits on the album though. The bassline really drives the song and will likely make for continued play in the clubs.
