Qual – Love Zone

William Maybelline’s fourth LP as Qual arrives on Fabrika Records, continuing the solo project he has run alongside Lebanon Hanover for over a decade. Where Lebanon Hanover operates in shared space, Qual is Maybelline alone, and Love Zone reflects that freedom.

The album was recorded entirely on hardware and mixed by Owen Pratt, a producer whose credits span Post Malone, Alice Cooper, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. That combination of raw analog construction and professional mixing gives the record a particular texture.

Nine tracks built around themes of screen addiction, digital decay, and technological obsession. “Tech Neck” opens the record and immediately recalls the heavy, minimal synth work of Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb. “For a Moment of Happiness” is a highlight from a sound design perspective, with the arp pattern sitting beautifully within the arrangement. The title track is abrasive and direct.
