Ladytron – I See Red

Ladytron has been a consistent presence in dark electronic music for 25 years. Their sound has shifted across that time, moving from the electroclash and nu-disco of their early releases into the more darkwave adjacent soundscapes they have occupied more recently. The tension between cool electronics and hypnotic melody. The sense that the band operates in a space entirely their own.

“I See Red” is their second new song after more than three years away, following “I Believe in You,” and it arrives with considerable energy. The band describes it as “high priestess disco,” which is accurate. The analog drumkit selection paired with the bassline gives the track its foundation, and the arp pattern that comes in during the chorus is the element that makes it genuinely infectious. The song builds irresistibly and then stays with you. You will find yourself singing “I see red” well after it ends.

The vocals are, as always with Ladytron, extraordinary. That has never changed across 25 years and it does not change here.

The accompanying music video, created by band member Daniel Hunt, carries the same energy and dark and elegant aesthetic.

No new album has been announced, but a remix collection titled “Nightlife” is due for Record Store Day Black Friday on November 28, featuring reworkings from Tiësto, Soulwax, Erol Alkan, Simian Mobile Disco, and Darren Emerson of Underworld. “I See Red” signals that a new era is underway. Based on this, that era is worth paying attention to.
