Balduvian Bears – Ursine
Balduvian Bears is the project of Zachary Anderson out of Salt Lake City, released on darkTunes Music Group. “Ursine” is a six-track EP released January 2, 2026, representing something of a mood shift for the project: softer edges, more intimate production, and a lo-fi retro quality that feels like it is coming from somewhere genuinely personal.
The EP opens with “Longing,” and it is a strong entry point. The bassline is immediately infectious, doing more work than its simplicity suggests. The drumkit has a distinctly retro character that suits the material well. Above it, reverb-drenched synths with a slight flutter give the track a dreamlike quality that the lyrics, spare, repetitive, deliberately isolated, reinforce without spelling out. The word longing is never actually uttered, but it seeps through every element of the production.
“Regret” is our favorite track on the record. The signature elements are all present: gated reverb on the snare, a driving bassline, synths soaked in reverb. The lyrical content carries more weight than usual. The imagery of betrayal and the search for forgiveness is bleak without being melodramatic. Anderson’s voice handles it without overselling it.
“2 Hearts” offers the EP’s most hopeful moment. Two figures running through a darkened sky, making it out alive. Fragile optimism, delivered without sentimentality.
“Ursine” is one of the more emotionally direct things Balduvian Bears has put out. The lo-fi production aesthetic earns its place here.
