Balduvian Bears – Hill (Past Dream)

Balduvian Bears is the project of Zachary Anderson out of Salt Lake City, released on darkTunes Music Group. “Hill (Past Dream)” is one of the most personal things the project has put out.

The song is built around a true memory. At thirteen, Anderson was told that a dream of flying would never come true. That moment of collapse is the emotional center of the track and the production carries it without overselling it. Analog drumkits open the song and establish the pace. A detuned synthesizer settles in underneath and provides an ambiance that sits somewhere between melancholy and acceptance. The vocals are buried slightly in the mix, which is exactly the right call. It gives the track a dream-like quality rather than a confessional one. The pain is present but gauze-wrapped.

The result is a song you can put on repeat and stay inside. Calming in the way that sad things sometimes are when they are handled honestly. The rhythm walks the line between sorrow and strength without tipping into either direction fully.

What becomes of the dreamers we leave behind? “Hill (Past Dream)” does not answer the question. It just sits with it.
