Best Darkwave Releases of May 2026
May delivered. Here are the five tracks that stayed on repeat.
5. Third Realm — Damage Has Been Done (11Grams Remix)
Third Realm released one of the stronger albums of the month in Escape Sequence, and while the original “Damage Has Been Done” is excellent, the 11Grams remix somehow edges it out. A different enough interpretation to justify its existence entirely.
4. Frozen Plasma — Silberlicht
Frozen Plasma doing what Frozen Plasma does best. Vasi’s synthesis work is impeccable, Felix’s vocals are as reliable as ever, and the chorus lands with the kind of staying power the duo has always delivered. One of their best tracks in a catalog of brilliant ones.
3. 2DCAT — Eat the Rich
2DCAT arrived with a full EP and a statement of intent. Cold, deliberate dark synthpop from Washington D.C. that builds from dissociation to fury to silence across six tracks. The title track is the entry point and it does not apologize for itself. HAEZL’s vocals carry the kind of classical training that is genuinely rare in this scene, and Johan builds his synthesizers from scratch.
2. hinfort — Of Letting Go
hinfort continues to be one of the more quietly consistent projects in the scene. Deep voice, synthesized pads, and a track that sits comfortably outside of any specific era. It would not sound out of place on an 80s post-punk compilation or alongside anything released this week. That kind of timelessness is not easy to manufacture.
1. Creux Lies — Jubilate
The bassline that opens this track sets the tone immediately and the song never lets go of it. Creux Lies deliver one of their strongest singles to date with a bridge and chorus that are genuinely exceptional. The word jubilate repeated like a chant against accumulating pressure is the kind of moment that stays with you long after the track ends.
Honorable mention: NNHMN — Strange Love arrived just after this list was written. Had the timing worked out it would have been a serious contender. Read our review here.
